Ice queens, queer music, Love Lies Bleeding
Plus, a medical drama and 20 LGBTQ films you may have missed
How is it already Tuesday again? Tara here with your latest in queer entertainment news.
🎧 Latest episode: Drunk me is fun, drunk her is awful
In last week’s episode, we cover important topics like whether all ice queens are cats. We also answer a listener question about which authors have unputdownable debut novels.
This week, Kris officially recommends the Canadian medical drama Nurses. It takes place in a hospital in downtown Toronto and she describes it as a less angsty Grey’s Anatomy.
I officially recommend Clare Ashton’s new sapphic romance, Tempting Olivia. Olivia Sachdeva is an icy, perfectionist lawyer in Oxford whose only indulgence is Kate Laurence films. Imagine her shock and horror when Kate Laurence hires Olivia to represent her in a divorce. This story is emotional and beautifully written. I guarantee it will be in my top 5 books of 2024.
While we’re at it
If you’re interested in another book with an ice queen, check out The Delicate Things We Make by Milena McKay (or any of her books, really).
It’s about a journalist who’s tasked with discovering the identity behind an elusive artist and is one of the books that prompted the reader question mentioned above. I also recommended it in episode 40.
🗞️ Queer entertainment news roundup
20 queer movies you may have missed. I’ve seen a couple and especially want to check out the two from the 1950’s. (Pride)
Katy O’Brien talks about the empowering experience of playing a bodybuilder in Love Lies Bleeding, showing that women’s bodies don’t all have to look the same. (Out)
Speaking of Love Lies Bleeding, are we entering a golden age of sapphic noir films? We probably need more than two in a year, but it would be fantastic if true. (Into)
Brandi Carlile recently sang about nature on Sesame Street with Big Bird and Snuffleupagus. It’s a great song and I’m finally checking out her music (please drop song or album recommendations in the comments, if you’re inclined).
Mae Martin is hosting a CBC documentary about gender fluidity in nature.
Ben Platt released a single from his forthcoming album and it’s gorgeous. Here’s the music video. I could listen to this on a loop. Read his interview with Queer Forty.
Michelle Visage is taking over the hosting seat on Drag Race Down Under. (Entertainment Weekly)
Until next time,
