What you can do about LGBTQ book bans
Emotional sapphic romances, Rebel Wilson's wedding, and more
Happy October! Tara here, with your latest in queer entertainment news!
🎧 NEW bonus episode: Hands off our books
Laura Green from the Sapphic Book Review podcast joins Kris and I for this important bonus episode to talk about the very real and current threats against access to LGBTQ fiction, including Project 2025 and state-level challenges.
We share tangible steps that anyone can take, no matter what country you live in. With most queer books being published in the US, the impacts of Project 2025 would be felt globally, so it’s time to do what you can.
🎧 Latest episode: Knife Queen
We’re coming up with new terms this episode, like knife queens, heart punchers, and sneak reading.
This week, Kris recommends the sapphic novel In Bloom by Kat Jackson. It’s a deeply emotional story (aka the “heart puncher”) with two damaged people, and Kris praises its beautiful writing and humor.
I recommend the latest from Rachel Lacey, View From the Top. It’s a one-night-to-forever romance that takes place in a small town, and it has one of the spiciest sex scenes I’ve read in a long time. It’s fun and sweet, with enough angst to keep things interesting. I’ll come back to this one when I need a comfort reread.
While we’re at it
If you want another sapphic book that’s a heart puncher, you need to check out The Goodmans by Clare Ashton. It’s too hard to sum up in two lines, so check out my review or just go buy it. I promise it delivers (and I was right in that review — it was my book of 2018).
🗞️ Queer entertainment news roundup
Congratulations to Rebel Wilson and Ramona Agruma on getting married this past weekend!
A review of Will and Harper that’s written by a Drew Burnett Gregory, my fave critic at Autostraddle, who is also a trans woman.
Lady Gaga recently explained why she never addressed rumors that she had a penis. I love her even more now (as if I needed another reason). (Them)
15 Halloween costume ideas for couples with one short person and one tall person. (Autostraddle)
Find out which 90’s fashion statement you are. I’m Levi’s 501, white pocket tee with the sleeves rolled up, low-key sneakers, a wide belt, a baseball cap, and sunglasses. Frankly, I’d still wear that today. (Autostraddle)
Until next time,
Tara & Kris
The bonus episode. Wow did I learn stuff. I did not know what Project 2025 was really about. I had heard reference to it, but here in Aus we don't hear much about it. I am mortified about what it actually means for our community and you guys living over there.
